Review a press-locked bar grating proposal as three linked decisions: the material for the exposure, the finish for the specified condition, and the panel geometry for the load. Approval of one does not approve the others.
Material review: identify the actual exposure
Describe whether the panel is indoors, outdoors or in a wash-down area. Record contact with chemicals, persistent moisture and adjacent materials where relevant. Ask the project team to approve a defined material grade; a broad description such as stainless or corrosion resistant is incomplete.
Finish review: define the delivered condition
Write the finish separately from the material grade and identify the applicable project requirement. Clarify how cut edges, fabrication details and any site alterations will be treated. If a sample is used to agree appearance, state that purpose explicitly; appearance approval is separate from the required coating or material documentation.
Load review: match the proposal to the supports
Supply the clear span, support layout, load case and deflection criterion. Confirm that the submitted table or calculation represents the proposed press-locked bar dimensions, material and arrangement. Identify concentrated loads, wheeled traffic and interruptions to bearing bars instead of assuming the panel is a uniformly loaded walkway.
Use a three-part approval record
- Material: selected grade, exposure assumptions, required certificate and approving person.
- Finish: specified treatment, inspection evidence and responsibility for any site repair.
- Performance: drawing revision, span, load criterion, calculation or table reference and design approval.
If an alternative material or bar section is proposed to reduce cost, reopen the affected review. Do not carry the original approval across to a changed panel solely because the overall dimensions remain the same.
Next steps
Use the press-locked drawing checklist to document the accepted geometry. The standards overview helps separate material, coating and grating requirements. Include the review record when requesting a project quotation.
