Steel Grating Standards for Global Projects
Steel grating standards are usually chosen by project location, product use and the engineering company behind the drawing. A platform grating, stair tread, trench cover and galvanized export order may each need a different standard reference. This page gives buyers a practical map before requesting a quote.
Use the project specification first. If the drawing names one standard, keep that standard as the controlling requirement. If the RFQ only says “steel grating”, “bar grating”, “hot-dip galvanized grating” or “trench cover”, the table below helps you decide what to confirm with the supplier.

Which steel grating standard is best for export orders?
There is no single best standard for every export order. NAAMM is strong for bar grating product selection and load data, BS and DIN are common in European-style specifications, ISO 14122 is used for machinery access, and ASTM or ISO galvanizing standards are often required for hot-dip galvanized steel grating.
Should I specify ASTM A123 or ISO 1461 for galvanized steel grating?
Use the standard named by the project first. ASTM A123/A123M is common in American-style specifications, while ISO 1461 and BS EN ISO 1461 are common for international and European-style projects. If the buyer is in the Middle East, ask whether the consultant or owner requires one of them.
Can the supplier quote without a named standard?
Yes, but the quote should still define bar size, spacing, load, finish, tolerance, panel layout, clips, packing and documents. If these details are missing, two suppliers may quote different products under the same “steel grating” name.
