Survey the stair frame as well as the tread being replaced. Record the connection faces, available support and condition of the fixing locations. Ask the responsible engineer to resolve damage or changes to the frame before the supplier finalizes a replacement drawing.
Use a separate schedule entry for each distinct tread arrangement. Treads that appear alike may still need individual confirmation where an existing stair has repairs or different connections. Mark the location of every surveyed type on a stair elevation or a simple location drawing.
Prepare a measurement schedule
For a grating stair tread enquiry, record the overall width and depth with a sketch showing the measurement points. Include the support or bearing detail required by the project. Show the bearing bar direction and the requested material and finish.
Draw both end plates and label their orientation. Locate holes from a stated datum and record centre positions, hole descriptions and the plate details requested by the engineer. Identify whether each dimension came from the frame, an existing tread or a design drawing. Ask the supplier to show proposed fit and any allowances explicitly for review.
Locate the nosing relative to the tread and end plates. Request its product description, dimensions and attachment detail. Include any project requirements for the leading edge or visible finish. A front photograph can help describe the existing arrangement, but the replacement drawing needs a dimensioned section.
Review the connection from the installer’s position
Show how the installer reaches the fasteners and identify nearby obstructions. Confirm who supplies bolts and associated hardware, and ask the engineer to approve their specification. If a proposed replacement requires changes to the existing frame, record those changes separately and obtain approval before manufacture.
Ask the site team to review the planned replacement sequence under its work procedures. Identify temporary access restrictions and the person coordinating release of the stair. The buying schedule should record these requirements without inventing a universal installation method for an unknown frame.
Approve one coordinated drawing set
Check the supplier’s tread drawing against the frame survey and the location schedule. Resolve left- and right-hand details and confirm that marks on the drawing distinguish special treads. Ask the engineer to review the completed arrangement against the project’s structural and access requirements.
At receipt, match each tread mark to its scheduled location and check the dimensions required by the agreed inspection plan. Record discrepancies before installation. Retain the final drawing, hardware specification and any accepted site changes with the maintenance file. A future replacement can then refer to the accepted assembly rather than reconstructing it from a worn tread.
