A marine location needs a more precise material brief than near the sea. Mark where the grating receives salt carried through the air, direct splash or immersion. Record sheltered areas and washing practices as well. These descriptions give the supplier a basis for assessing the proposed material and finish at each location.
Prepare the marine steel grating schedule by exposure zone and connect each zone to the layout drawing. Use the same references in the material review, panel list and inspection records.
Describe the water contact
Ask the project team for the water chemistry and temperature information relevant to the actual installation. Record how often the panel becomes wet, whether it dries between events and whether contact changes during different operations. Identify information based on project documents separately from observations made during a survey.
For a dock, show the relevant levels and locations where splash or immersion forms part of the intended exposure. For an offshore access platform, distinguish protected areas from exposed edges. At a coastal process plant, identify process liquids separately from seawater so the material review addresses the correct substances.
Show the connections and sheltered faces
Provide sections through panel supports, clips, bolts and adjacent metalwork. Identify the material of each component and show interfaces where inspection or cleaning access is limited. Include underside conditions rather than relying only on the view from the walking surface.
Ask the responsible reviewer to assess the complete proposed assembly for the recorded conditions. A material decision for the panel leaves the connection details unresolved if they use different materials or a different finish. Record the accepted combination in the drawing and purchasing schedule.
Compare proposals against the same zones
Send each supplier the same exposure description. Request the exact alloy, coating or other system identification, supporting technical information and any limits to the recommendation. Where the supplier needs additional site data, obtain it before accepting the proposal.
Keep the reasoning for each accepted zone with the offer. If one system is proposed throughout the project, ask the reviewer to confirm that the supporting information covers every listed exposure. A general marine description should not replace that documented review.
Record the intended cleaning substances and method, inspection access and any planned removal of panels. Ask the supplier for maintenance information for the selected product. Coordinate removable sections with the site team so cleaning below the grating and refitting the fixings are part of the agreed procedure.
Retain panel marks, connection details and accepted material documents in the maintenance file. When a replacement is needed, review whether the exposure or cleaning practice has changed. Order against the current approved zone description and record the replacement product beside the original installation details.
