Large platform orders: separate permanent panels from removable access bays

Use an area schedule and panel marks to distinguish permanent platform flooring from removable access bays before fabrication and packing are released.

A large platform grating order needs a schedule that explains how the panels belong to the area. Mark permanent flooring and removable access bays separately on the layout. Ask the operating team to identify the equipment and service points that require access before the panel breakdown is approved.

Agree the area layout before the packing list

Divide the platform into working areas using project references the installer will recognize. Give each area a drawing reference and assign panel marks within it. Record which panels are intended to remain fixed and which have an approved removal requirement. Keep that distinction visible when the order is divided into fabrication or delivery batches.

Ask the project team to resolve access requirements with the relevant equipment drawings. Identify the person responsible for each opening and the date its dimensions must be confirmed. An equipment detail that is still changing should appear on the open-item list for the affected panels.

Give each panel a readable schedule line

Use consistent fields across the order: panel mark, location, quantity, drawing revision, dimensions, orientation and fabrication details. Add the approved fixing arrangement and the permanent or removable designation. Reference cut-outs and special shapes to a drawing instead of squeezing an incomplete description into a short item name.

Where two panels share dimensions but have different access or fixing requirements, keep their identities separate. Ask the fabricator to show how its shop records and marks will preserve the distinction. The installer should not need to infer a panel’s role from its position within a bundle.

Handle changes by the affected marks

When an access opening changes, identify the panel marks and drawing sheets involved. Ask whether fabrication has started, and obtain the supplier’s response on the affected scope before issuing a replacement instruction. Keep the accepted change in the panel schedule and the order’s clarification record.

Give the supplier a clear release status for each area. If a phased release is agreed, state what may proceed and what remains on hold. Circulate the same status record to the purchasing, fabrication and installation teams. An email about one revised opening should not become the only record of which panels are ready to manufacture.

Pack for the agreed installation sequence

Review the proposed grouping with the site team. Ask for package marks that connect to the panel schedule and identify any accessories packed separately. Record delivery and storage constraints before the supplier finalizes the bundles. Keep the handling plan with the people responsible for unloading and moving them.

Before dispatch, reconcile the released panel schedule with the package contents. At site receiving, record shortages or unclear marks against the relevant area. The handover file should contain the final layout, panel schedule, fixing references and accepted changes, including the identification of removable bays and any inspection or access arrangements required by the project.
