Read a steel grating load table in a fixed order. Start with the table’s scope and units, then locate the proposed bar section and span, and only then compare the relevant loading information with the project requirement.
Confirm that the table represents your panel
Record the material and grating construction covered by the table. Match the bearing bar dimensions and spacing to the proposed drawing. A table for a different material or arrangement is not a substitute simply because the overall panel width is similar.
Locate the span and the correct load case
Use the span definition stated in the table and reconcile it with the support drawing. Distinguish uniformly distributed loading from concentrated loading and read the associated units. Keep the required deflection criterion alongside the load requirement rather than selecting a row by its largest number.
Read the notes before accepting the result
The steel load tables in NAAMM MBG 531-24 include a note that the listed loads do not include the grating dead load. Record and resolve such basis notes in the design review; do not assume every supplier table uses identical conventions.
Keep a traceable selection record
- Table source, edition or revision and units.
- Selected construction, material and bar section.
- Span and supporting arrangement.
- Required load case and deflection criterion.
- Relevant notes, exceptions and approving reviewer.
If the panel includes unusual supports, interrupted bars or a load case the table does not address, use the table applicability checklist. The submission review guide helps compare supplier evidence.
