When a Standard Grating Load Table Needs Further Review

Identify situations where panel supports, cut-outs, concentrated loads or changed service conditions need review beyond a standard grating table.

A standard load table is useful when the proposed panel and service conditions fit its stated scope. Before using it, identify details that may require a project-specific review.

Look for differences in support conditions

Compare the actual supports and span with the arrangement assumed by the table. Flag unusual support positions, cantilevered portions or uncertain bearing details. Do not reduce these differences to a single overall panel dimension.

Identify interruptions in the panel

Show penetrations, notches and other changes that affect the bearing bars. Ask the reviewer to confirm the resulting arrangement and any required edge or support detail. A table selection made for an uncut panel should not automatically be carried over after the layout changes.

Describe concentrated or moving loads

Provide the load magnitude and the relevant contact or wheel information specified by the project team. Identify where and how the load is applied. Dividing a wheel load by the whole platform area does not, by itself, represent the local loading condition.

Revisit changed use

If a walkway becomes a route for equipment or the maintenance procedure changes, compare the new requirements with the accepted design basis. An existing installation or an old purchase description is not evidence that the revised service has already been checked.

Prepare the review package

  • Marked panel and support drawing.
  • Proposed material and bar arrangement.
  • Project load cases and acceptance criteria.
  • Description of the detail outside the standard table assumptions.
  • The required approval before fabrication or use.

Start with the load-table reading guide and include unresolved conditions in the quotation input schedule.
