For a visible floor, access panel or architectural installation, a small product photo leaves several appearance decisions unresolved. A press-locked steel grating sample or mock-up can make those decisions reviewable before the full order is fabricated.
Choose what the sample must demonstrate
A single panel can show bar spacing, edge treatment and finish. If the concern is alignment across a larger area, request a mock-up including the joint between panels and a representative frame or support. Label the material, finish and construction represented by the sample so it is not mistaken for a different production option.
Review the installation as it will be seen
- Confirm the intended top face and direction of the bars.
- Inspect how bar lines meet at panel joints and changes of direction.
- Review exposed perimeter edges, banding and visible fixings.
- Check the appearance of a representative cut-out or notch.
- Agree the viewing conditions and record any accepted visible variation.
Separate appearance from dimensional and structural acceptance
Record appearance comments against the sample reference, then keep dimensions and tolerances on the drawing. The appearance sample does not establish load capacity, coating compliance or suitability for a particular opening. Those require their own specified evidence.
Carry the accepted sample into the order
Give the approved sample or mock-up an identifier and keep photographs with the written comments. State whether the sample is an appearance reference, a dimensional reference or both. If the fabricator later proposes a different bar arrangement or finish, identify which approvals need to be repeated.
On delivery, inspect representative panels before mixing bundles or beginning installation. Record any difference from the approved appearance with panel marks and photographs so the supplier can identify the affected items.
