Cut-to-size steel grating starts with the installed opening and ends with identified panels that can be placed in the correct location. Treat survey, drawing release, fabrication and delivery as connected steps so a measurement assumption does not pass unnoticed into production.
Survey the opening and supports
Record the opening geometry, support positions and bearing direction. Label whether each dimension is an opening measurement or a proposed panel dimension. Show irregular corners, obstructions and service penetrations. If the structure is incomplete, mark the dimensions that still require site confirmation.
Turn the survey into a panel layout
Give each panel a mark and show how the area is divided. Identify cut-outs, perimeter treatment and interfaces with neighbouring panels. Include fixing access and any panels that must be removable. The final panel dimensions and clearances should be agreed for the actual detail, rather than copied from a generic allowance.
Agree the fabrication and finish sequence
Ask the fabricator to identify how cutting, edge treatment and the specified finish will be coordinated. If a site alteration may be needed, define its approval and finish-repair responsibility before delivery. Do not assume that an unplanned cut can be made without reviewing the affected bars and edge detail.
Check finished panels against the released revision
- Match the panel mark and quantity to the approved schedule.
- Inspect the specified dimensions and cut-out locations.
- Confirm edge components and fixing provisions.
- Review the delivered finish and required records.
- Arrange packing so the marks remain traceable at installation.
