Catwalk grating should be planned around the maintenance route, rather than ordered as a simple width-and-length item. Support spacing, handrail interfaces, elevation changes and access to equipment all affect the correct panel layout.
Check bearing-bar direction before ordering
Confirm the clear span and ensure bearing bars run between the supports. A plan view can look correct while the panel orientation is wrong for the load path. Record the design load and deflection criterion alongside the support lines.
Plan for wet and outdoor access
Drainage, debris clearance and slip resistance deserve attention on outdoor and process-area catwalks. Serrated surfaces may help where wet or oily footwear is expected, while removable panels and clear panel marks simplify later inspection.
