Steel Grating Weight Estimates: Engineering Review and Traceability

Record the specification, quantity basis and allowances behind a grating weight estimate so drawing revisions and shipping totals can be checked.

A grating weight total is difficult to review if nobody can reconstruct its inputs. Attach a calculation basis to the panel schedule so the engineer, buyer and shipping team know which revision and components the estimate represents.

Create a weight-estimate record

  • Identification: project, drawing revision, panel mark and quantity.
  • Source: supplier table or calculation reference, units and date.
  • Construction: material, bar dimensions and spacing used for the unit weight.
  • Area basis: finished rectangle, net cut area or another explicitly defined basis.
  • Allowances: included and excluded banding, toe plates, fixings, coating and packing.
  • Status: preliminary estimate, fabrication estimate or verified shipping weight.

Keep three different questions separate

The panel’s mass describes the panel itself. Its allowable service load requires the applicable design information and support conditions. The shipment’s gross weight includes the packing and other supplied items. A single number labelled grating weight cannot answer all three questions.

Review changes by panel mark

When a drawing changes, identify which panel marks are affected and recalculate those lines. A larger opening may remove grating but add edge components; a change in bar section can affect every panel using that section. Record the revision rather than overwriting an old total without explanation.

Reconcile fabrication and shipment records

Check that the counted panels, spare panels and accessory packages agree with the order. Keep net panel totals separate from pallet or bundle totals. Where weighing is required, record the measured value against the bundle identity and explain any material difference from the estimate before releasing the shipping documents.

The worked unit-weight example shows the arithmetic. Use the quotation request to ask a supplier to state its weight basis and exclusions.
