An open panel and a plate-covered panel need different information on the drawing. Before comparing quotations, ask suppliers to show what each assembly contains. Identify each material, its dimensions and the connections between components. Keep that description with the purchase order.
Record the geometry being quoted
For an expanded-metal proposal, request the manufacturer’s dimensioned sheet geometry, strand details, overall size and orientation. Ask the supplier to identify the product form and surface condition using its own catalog terminology. Keep these entries separate from the bearing-bar and cross-bar details used for fabricated bar grating.
If a supplier proposes one product in place of another, request the complete specification and supporting documents. The review needs to cover the submitted arrangement, its supports and its attachments. A similar-looking opening pattern does not establish that the proposed assembly is acceptable.
Show the cover plate and supporting panel separately
For compound steel grating, request a section drawing that identifies the cover plate, underlying grating and attachment detail. Record the plate material, thickness, surface description and joint positions. The drawing should also show whether the plate ends at each grating panel or crosses a removable-panel boundary.
Have the engineer state the structural arrangement being assessed. An added plate does not by itself justify choosing a smaller supporting panel. The supplier should identify its design basis, and the responsible engineer should accept it.
Request the mass of the complete fabricated assembly and distinguish it from the mass of either component. Include banding, attachments and special pieces in the quantity schedule so the installation team can plan handling and installation.
State what must pass through and what must remain covered
Document the intended drainage, ventilation and containment conditions. Show where water or residue will go, which openings are required and who approves them. When open-area information matters, request a product-specific value with its source and measurement basis. A percentage copied from another product is not a useful comparison.
Identify access points that require inspection or cleaning. Ask how the underside, attachment locations and concealed areas can be checked during fabrication and after installation. If the plate changes access to fasteners, settle that detail with the installer before approval.
Release the accepted construction with the order
Make the accepted section drawing part of the order. Identify inspection stages that must occur before areas are covered and request the agreed records. Pack and mark special assemblies separately so the installation team can match each supplied construction to its approved location without separating layers to identify it.
