A rectangular panel outline gives the fabricator its shape. The drawing also needs to show how the grating sits on the structure. For a purchasing package, mark the bearing bar direction and the supports together so the supplier and project engineer are reviewing the same arrangement.
Draw the support arrangement first
Show the actual support lines under each panel, including intermediate supports where present. Label the clear spans and provide support section details. Distinguish dimensions taken from a site survey from those copied from design drawings. If the supporting steel is still being detailed, identify who will confirm the final arrangement before manufacture.
Add a bearing direction arrow to every panel type. Do not rely on an overall length and width convention unless it is explicitly defined on the drawing. A consistent arrow and panel mark are easier to follow when a layout contains rotated panels or several similar sizes.
For 316 stainless steel grating, give the supplier the engineer’s specified bar dimensions, spacing and loading requirements with the layout. Ask the engineer to review any proposed change in panel construction or orientation. A material grade designation does not settle the structural selection.
Resolve details around openings
Locate pipe penetrations, columns and other cut-outs from a stated drawing datum. Show which panel contains each opening and identify any banding or additional support called for by the design. A sketch of the opening without its position on the panel leaves the fabricator with an incomplete instruction.
Ask for a coordinated fabrication drawing that shows panel marks, orientation, finished dimensions and attachment positions. Check it against the support drawing and the latest equipment layout. Where an opening or support has moved, identify all affected panel marks in the revision note.
Use a short drawing review record
- Can each scheduled panel be found on the layout?
- Are the bearing arrows and support lines clear at that location?
- Do the cut-out dimensions use the same reference points as the installation drawing?
- Has the engineer accepted the proposed construction and support details?
- Does the supplier have the current approved revision?
For a platform that joins a route of walkway grating, include the transition in the review. Identify changes in panel orientation and any interface handled by another contractor.
Keep the approved layout with the packing schedule. The installer should be able to match a panel mark on the shipment to a location and bearing arrow without having to interpret an earlier quotation sketch.
