Before ordering covers for an existing trench, make a drawing of the channel and its supporting frame. Record the surveyed opening separately from the proposed finished cover size. Label the dimensions clearly so a supplier does not have to decide whether a number refers to the concrete opening, frame or grating panel.
Measure the whole run
Show the trench length, changes in width, corners and end conditions. Record the frame profile, support locations and the intended level of the finished cover. For an existing installation, use measured details and photographs of the frame condition. Ask the project engineer to resolve damaged or incomplete supports before approving replacement panels.
Divide the run into identified cover sections. State whether the supplier is quoting only the grating or also the frame and attachments. The trench cover grating enquiry should make these boundaries clear when different contractors supply the channel and its covers.
Put the engineer’s required support and fit details on the drawing, including any specified gaps or tolerances. Avoid deriving a finished panel width from the visible opening alone. Ask the supplier to return a dimensioned section showing how the proposed cover sits in the actual frame.
Plan the sections that need to lift out
Mark which sections operations staff need to remove and describe the intended handling method for project review. Request individual panel weights and identify access restrictions near equipment or walls. If lifting features are required, have their design and position agreed with the responsible engineer and the site team.
Check how an operator reaches the fasteners and where a removed cover can be placed. Give each special section its own panel mark. A corner piece, end panel or cover around an obstruction should have enough detail to distinguish it from the straight sections in the packing list.
Confirm material and delivery details
Where the approved specification requires 316 stainless steel grating, carry the grade and requested finish into the panel schedule. Include compatible attachment requirements for review, and ask the supplier to identify the material supplied for each assembly component.
Before manufacture, reconcile the survey, approved fabrication drawing and order quantities. Decide how replacement panels will be identified on site and request matching panel marks on the shipment. Retain the final cover schedule with the installation records so a later maintenance order can refer to a specific section and revision.
