An ASTM reference in a steel grating order should identify the requirement it controls. The steel material, zinc coating and completed panel design need separate checks. Writing only “ASTM steel grating” leaves the supplier without a complete acceptance specification.

Separate material requirements from galvanizing requirements

ASTM A36/A36M addresses carbon structural steel. ASTM A1011/A1011M addresses hot-rolled steel sheet and strip across several steel categories. These references describe material requirements; specify the applicable product form, grade and contract edition rather than treating the designations as interchangeable.

ASTM A123/A123M covers hot-dip zinc coatings on iron and steel products within its scope. It is a coating specification, so evidence of galvanizing compliance does not establish the grating panel’s load capacity.

Turn the standard reference into a reviewable purchase requirement

  • Material: identify the component, product form, grade and standard edition required by the project. Ask the supplier to identify any proposed substitution before order approval.
  • Coating: state the applicable galvanizing requirement and the inspection documentation to be supplied. Resolve any customer-specific coating or repair requirements in the purchase documents.
  • Panel performance: provide bearing bar dimensions, pitch, direction, clear span, supports, design loads and deflection criteria. Request the relevant load table or design review for the actual panel arrangement.
  • Fabrication: record cut-outs, banding, toe plates, fixing provisions and drawing revision. A material certificate cannot confirm these drawing details.

Check the evidence supplied with the order

Ask which certificate or inspection record demonstrates each requirement and how it is connected to the delivered material or shipment. Keep the accepted standard editions, material identification, drawing revision and inspection records together. If a quotation says only “ASTM compliant,” ask the supplier to name the designation and scope of that claim.

For example, review a proposed material certificate against the material line of the specification, a coating report against the finish requirement, and a panel calculation against the design information. One document should not be assumed to cover all three.

How ASTM and NAAMM fit together

NAAMM publishes grating-specific manuals; ASTM publishes the material and coating specifications discussed above. Use the project’s required documents together. Our NAAMM specification checklist explains how to select a grating manual and prepare the design submission.

Questions about ASTM steel grating

Does ASTM A123 specify the bearing bar size?

It addresses the zinc coating. Determine the panel geometry and load suitability through the project design requirements and applicable grating design information.

Should I automatically use the newest edition?

State the edition required by the contract and confirm any proposed change with the project team. The linked publisher pages are references for scope, not a substitute for the project’s governing specification.

Use the steel grating standards overview to organise the requirements, then send your drawing and specification for quotation. This guide explains purchasing checks; it does not reproduce the standards or certify a particular panel.
