A vehicle crossing needs a loading brief that describes the vehicles and their route across the grating. Send that brief with the frame and support drawing to the responsible engineer. The label heavy duty does not provide the information needed to review a particular crossing.
When discussing heavy duty steel grating, identify the offered panel construction and the proposed complete assembly. Keep the vehicle data, support details and supplier calculations together through the approval process.
Describe the vehicles that will use the route
Obtain the relevant loading information from the vehicle owner or equipment documents. Include loaded operating conditions, wheel arrangement, tyre or wheel details and the contact information requested by the engineer. Record the source of each value and flag any item that is still an estimate.
Ask about occasional users as well as routine traffic. A maintenance vehicle, delivery trolley or replacement piece of equipment may form part of the intended use. Put confirmed requirements in the brief so the designer can assess them; do not quietly add future use after the crossing is approved.
Draw how traffic reaches the panel
Mark the normal travel direction and where wheels cross panel joints or frame edges. Show turning, stopping and reversing locations. Include changes in level and other site features for the engineer to consider when reviewing movement across the assembly.
Describe how often the route is used and any special operating conditions. Ask the engineer which additional information is needed for the loading review. If traffic will follow a controlled route, identify who maintains that restriction and include it in the operating documents.
Review the panel, frame and supports together
Provide sections showing panel orientation, supporting members, bearing locations, frame connections and anchorage. Record the condition of existing supports where the project uses retained steelwork or concrete. Assign investigation of defects to the responsible party before finalising the replacement design.
For a removable cover, show the proposed seating and retention details. Ask how the panel will be removed for cleaning and how its correct position will be checked afterward. Include the complete fixing arrangement in the review rather than requesting approval for an isolated panel.
Make the approval limits visible
Request calculations or other accepted evidence that identify the product, supports, vehicle loading and assumptions reviewed. Check that the delivered assembly matches those documents. Resolve substitutions or altered supports before accepting the crossing for use.
The handover record should state the approved operating conditions and the process for reviewing changes. Give the maintenance team the panel marks, removal instructions and replacement fixing details. If a different vehicle is later proposed, send its data and the installed assembly records for review before changing the route’s permitted use.
