Specify full edge banding when the panel edge is exposed, cut, unsupported by a frame, or needs to safely transfer local handling and service forces. A standard 19W4 designation does not decide the banding scope. You need the panel layout, bearing-bar direction, cut-out locations, support detail and intended handling method to define it correctly.
Separate the spacing label from the fabrication requirement
19W4 describes a welded grating spacing pattern; it does not say which edges are banded. When full banding is normally worth specifying

- Removable panels: handling, lifting and repeated removal can justify a more robust perimeter detail.
- Adjacent floor transitions: interfaces at toe plates, stair landings, trench frames or uneven supports need a coordinated edge detail.
- Specified architectural finish: an exposed, straight perimeter may require banding even where structural support is available.

- Show support lines and label the bearing-bar direction on the plan.

- Confirm whether the band is for finish, load transfer, handling or all three.
- Review the finished shop drawing before fabrication, especially after field dimensions change.
Limits and misconceptions
Banding is not a substitute for adequate bearing-bar support. It also does not make an unapproved cut-out acceptable. If bearing bars are interrupted or notched at a support, the responsible engineer must review the altered load path.
