A colour sample settles appearance. The coating order still needs a named system, a prepared surface, an inspection plan and an agreed method for repairing damage. These details matter when a grating panel and its adjacent railing come from different fabricators but must have the same finish.
Use the materials and finishes guide to describe the candidate finish. Then attach the coating specification to the steelwork schedule so the estimator, fabricator and inspector work from the same revision.
Describe the complete coating system
Record the steel substrate, preparation process, coating product names, coat sequence and requested colour. Where powder coating is proposed, ask which pretreatment and powder product the supplier will use. The product designation belongs in the offer alongside the colour reference.
Give the coating supplier the exposure information: indoor or outdoor location, substances that may reach the surface, cleaning method and operating conditions. Request a written response identifying the proposed system and its limitations. If the supplier proposes a substitute, review its technical documents before approving the change.
Review the difficult details on the drawing
Mark panel edges, serrations, welds, drain holes, mounting plates and concealed faces. A railing has underside joints and base plates that a broad sample plate cannot represent. For grating, include the intersections and cut edges in the inspection discussion. Ask how the supplier will prepare and inspect these areas using the agreed specification.
Settle the fabrication sequence before coating begins. Show which holes, cut-outs and welded attachments belong in the factory scope. If site alterations are expected, list them separately with the proposed repair procedure and the party responsible for accepting the repaired finish.
Agree what the inspection record contains
- The drawing and coating specification revisions used for the batch.
- Product identification and batch details for the coating materials.
- Preparation and application records required by the agreed system.
- Inspection locations, results and any areas returned for repair.
- Photographs that connect repaired areas to identifiable panel or railing marks.
Agree the acceptance criteria before manufacture. A photograph records appearance; other requirements need the measurements or records specified for the job. Keep the approved sample available to the inspector when colour and visible finish form part of acceptance.
Assign handling damage and site repair
Ask the packer to show the proposed separators, bundle contact points and restraint arrangement. On delivery, record damage before distributing components around the site. Distinguish transport damage from changes made during installation in the receiving report.
The handover file should identify the approved repair material, its application instructions and who signs off the repair. Keep spare material details and the final colour reference with the maintenance records so a later repair does not depend on matching a faded photograph.
